    Psychiatric and psychological practice and research is critically dependent on diagnosis. Yet the nature of psychiatric diagnosis and the rules by which disorders should be created and organized have been highly controversial for over 100 years. Unlike simple medical disorders (like infectious diseases), psychiatric disorders cannot be traced to one simple etiologic agent.


    The last two generations have seen major conceptual shifts in the approach to diagnosis with the rise of operationalized criteria and an emphasis on a descriptive rather than etiological approach to diagnosis. The interest in psychiatric diagnoses is particularly heightened now because both of the major psychiatric classifications in the world - DSM and ICD - are now undergoing major revisions. What makes psychiatric nosology so interesting is that it sits at the intersection of philosophy,

    empirical psychiatric/psychological research, measurement theory, historical tradition and policy. This makes the field fertile for a conceptual analysis.


    This book brings together established experts in the wide range of disciplines that have an interest in psychiatric nosology. The contributors include philosophers, psychologists, psychiatrists, historians and representatives of the efforts of DSM-III, DSM-IV and DSM-V. Some of the questions addressed include i) what is the nature of psychiatric illness? Can it be clearly defined and if so how? ii) What is the impact of facts versus values in psychiatric classification? iii) How have concepts

    of psychiatric diagnosis changed over time? iv) How can we best conceptualize the central idea of diagnostic validity? And v) Can psychiatric classification be a cumulative enterprise seeking improvements at each iteration of the diagnostic manual? Each individual chapter is introduced by the editors

    and is followed by a commentary, resulting in a dynamic discussion about the nature of psychiatric disorders.


    This book will be valuable for psychiatrists, psychologists and other mental health trainees and professionals with an interest in the questions and problems of psychiatric diagnosis, as well as philosophers and philosophy students interested in the problems posed by psychiatry, particularly those working in the philosophy of science.

      Keep in mind that a diagnosis of a so-called mental illness is not based on medical science. Mental illnesses, such as depression, don't cause suffering. Depression is caused by life circumstances. So-called mental illnesses are simply labels attached to a collection of symptoms. Those symptoms are the result, not the cause, of suffering.There has been no empirical or biological evidence supporting a biological cause of any of the so-called mental illnesses. This means that diagnosing mental illnesses according to theoretical chemical imbalances or genetic dispositions is a sham. It's not medical. The DSM is based on the wishful thinking of psychiatry -- which is rapidly fading as a legitimate medical discipline. This is because there is no empirical evidence supporting the biological theory of mental illness on which psychiatry is based. So-called mental illnesses are socialogical not medical. Once this is accepted they make a lot more sense.

          This is the best of the radcase series books. The cases are excellent and the discussion that follows is relevant, with additional imaging shown of important differential diagnoses to help distinguish the displayed diagnosis.

          The biggest strength of this book was it gave me a solid understanding of how to tackle the mystery scan. I felt confident in identifying any nuclear scan after reading this book.

          Highly recommended for radiology residents studying for the core.

          This book provides the current state of knowledge of basic mechanisms of adverse drug reactions (ADRs). The main focus is on idiosyncratic drug reactions because they are the most difficult to deal with. It starts with a general description of the major targets for ADRs followed by a description of what are presently believed to be mediators and biochemical pathways involved in idiosyncratic drug reactions. There is also a description of several examples of ADRs that serve to illustrate specific aspects of ADR mechanisms. Eventually the book shows that ultimately better methods are needed to predict which drug candidates are likely to cause ADRs and which patients are at increased risk. But at present research seems to be far from this goal.

              This text book has numerous errors in it. During the course of my Immunohematology class the number of errors that were seen in this book keeps going up. We have emailed the publisher/ company/ writer, but have never gotten a response. My classmates used a total of three different texts for this class and the Quinley text disagreed with the other two and when verified with the internet sources Quinley was usually incorrect. Huge disagreements in antigen/ antibody characteristics. Other big Typos's.. An example is on P292 under unit selection for transfusion of infants after birth. The text refers to "Box 16-4" for the formula on how to calculate the reconstitution of a unit after centrifugation. Box 16-4 actually contains a list of clinical indications for administration of RHIG. The actual needed formula is not listed. I will definetely get rid of this text once the class is finished.

              There are not enough harsh words to describe the hot mess of this unfortunate text book. I simply could not believe the gross numbers of factual and grammatical errors that could exist in one text and that all of them escaped the attention of the author and the editors?! These people could not possibly be authorities in the field of transfusion medicine. Please do not waste your valuable time and hard earned cash on this text. I gave up on this text after a couple of weeks and ended up purchasing "Modern Blood Banking & Transfusion Practices" by Denise Harmening. I had previously used and was very pleased with Harmening's Hematology text and knew her Blood Banking text would not disappoint. It is written clearly, concisely, and without errors.
