There is currently increasing interest concerning the biology and disease caused by Acinetobacter species. Such interest, however, developed relatively slowly because of the necessity to clarify the confusing taxonomy of these organisms. Much work was needed to identify various species as members of this genus, to recognize their epidemiologic profile, their pathogenic role and their increasing importance as multi-antibiotic resistant organisms. In recent years improvement of genetic approaches, recognition of plasmids, integrons and chromosomal sources of resistance mechanisms aroused interest on the role of Acinetobacters in disease by many microbiologists and clinicians, especially internists and infectious disease specialists. In this regard, physicians are frequently confronted with extremely difficult therapeutic approaches for treatment and prevention of severe nosocomial infections due to multi antibiotic resistant Acinetobacter. Moreover, recent observations of community acquired infections have been reported, especially in patients with various risk factors such as immuno-deficiencies. Also, it is now becoming evident that Acinetobacter infections occur frequently in violent situations such as earthquake or war zones. The mechanisms of Acinetobacter virulence are becoming increasingly clear, providing new insights into their pathogenic role in community acquired infections. It is apparent the time is appropriate for detailed review of the increasing knowledge concerning important new information, both clinical and therapeutic, especially information concerning virulence, resistance mechanisms and typing of Acinetobacter spp. Many new findings are accumulating in almost an exponential manner since publication of previous books on this subject in 1991 and 1996.

I just finished reading this as a borrow on my Kindle. It took me about 5 minutes, no kidding. I wouldn't say it's a terrible book, but if I'd paid 2.99 for it, I'd be more careful about buying unreviewed e-books in the future!

Besides being a very short read, the information inside is very basic. Of course, it has to be if it's less than 20 standard pages long! It contains some good pointers - get large, rectangular cages (although does anyone find stainless steel cages like it recommends? I rarely find non-painted cages, although they're bird-safe paint); avoid placing the cage in the kitchen (fumes) or near windows (drafts or overheating), etc.

It's not that the advice is terrible, it's just that there's not much detail. If you've read about budgies from other sources, that won't be a huge problem, but if this is your first or only source material, oh boy. For example, the author recommends feeding a seed mixture, without any discussion of pellets vs. seeds. He also recommends "an occasional mix of vegetables, fruits and grains" without going into any more detail about which can be most beneficial to your bird or the pros and cons of certain fruits or veggies (for example, Barron's Budgerigars book by Hildegard Niemann, points out that avocados are toxic to Budgies). When it comes to bonding with a new bird, Winkler suggests sticking your hand in the cage to get it used to you as you talk steadily. It sounds decent, but I think new owners need way more advice than that.

Niemann's book, for example, has dos and don'ts of bonding with your new bird: "Approach the cage slowly, indirectly in a wide arc, all the while talking to your budgie. If it pulls back, stand still and wait until the bird relaxes again. When the bird accepts your closeness, try attracting it with millet. Praise it while it is feeding. Repeat this exercise several times daily, until the bird has become used to it." And that's just step one of three!

I won't waste any more of my time or yours comparing the two books. Niemann's is more detailed and practical. I'll add a link to it. I swear I'm not a paid rep for Barrons or Niemann (LOL!) but there's a real difference in quality. Here's the link: Budgerigars (Complete Pet Owner's Manual)

Book was advertised as like new condition. It had some highlighting, writing, and bent corners. Overall a good purchase. The highlighting was not that bad and most of the writing was identification of the previous owner. The book serves the purpose that it was purchased for adequately and it was less than I would have paid through the college bookstore even with upgraded shipping. Had to have the book since the college bookstore ran out. I will definitely be back again when it is time to have books for next semester.

Allied health professions are not well defined, even though there has been several attempts to do so. The US Public Health Service Act defines allied health professions as: a health professional (other than registered nurse or physician assistant), who has received a certificate, an associate's degree, a bachelor's degree, a master's degree, a doctoral degree or post baccalaureate training in a science relating to health care, who shares in the responsibility for the delivery of health care services or related services, including (1) services related to the identification, evaluation and prevention of disease and disorder, (2) dietary and nutrition services, (3) health promotion services, (4) rehabilitaion services, or (5) health systems management service and who has not received a degree of doctor of medicine, a degree of doctor of osteopathy, a degree of doctor of veterinary medicine, a degree of doctor of optometry, a degree of podiatric medicine, a degree of doctor of pharmacy, a graduate degree in public health, a degree of doctor of chiropractic, a degree in health administration, a doctoral degree in clinical psychology or a degree of social work or equivaleent.

Under all circumstances this field has been growing fast and by 2005 about 4 million new job in this field will be added in the US and comprise 60% of the health care workforce. Pedro Lecca is professor and dean of the College of Pharmacy, Nursing and Allied Health Sciences at Howard University in Washington DC, Peggy Valentine associate dean and Kevin Lyons the associate dean of the College of Health Professions at Thomas Jefferson University, who together with 23 contributors have compiled 19 chapters about this field. This comprehensive book discuss topics like managed care, primary health care, rehabilitation, computer technology, drug information and educational issues.
