This appears to be a very solid work in most regards. You get the benefit of MDACC radiology as well as input from surgeons, medical oncologists, and radiation oncologists. As a resident oncologist I have been waiting for just such a book to help me as I review imaging and try to learn newer imaging modalities. The book is certainly written to radiologists, but appears useful for other specialists.

Each chapter takes you through the available imaging modalities with great illustrations of current AJCC 7 staging for each cancer site. The anatomy of the site is discussed with additional illustrations all emphasizing anatomy relevant to the surgeons and radiation oncologists. Each chapter also includes a section on the nodal anatomy often with illustrations if relevant. The book then goes into the various imaging modalities. Each of the relevant modalities is discussed in a fair amount of details with several excellent images.

The chapters also include brief sections on treatment and many of the chapters contain the MDACC treatment guidelines - precursors to the NCCN guidelines. These are an excellent resource as well.

The real failure of this book is the chapter and section selection and topic emphasis. There are no sections on head and neck - which represents some of the most challenging anatomy for surgeons and radiation oncologists and this absence alone renders the book unfinished in my mind. There is also no CNS imaging, another notable loss. In the place of these chapter there are three on pancreatic cancer and four on metastasis. These are all welcome subjects, but they do not seem as clinically useful to the student or practitioner as the subjects that they chose not to cover. In addition, the chapter length of focus rarely seem to emphasize the relative technical challenge of the cancers (perhaps they represent the challenge of the imaging from the radiologist point of view).

The book would be 4 stars if they added chapters on the above subjects, but as it is I regretfully cannot recommend it and would not buy it again. I will unfortunately still be searching for a more comprehensive oncologic imaging book.

I am a radiologist, who like most radiologists, has a significant portion of his practice being oncologic imaging. The book covers in a detailed fashion all of the major cancers. Unlike the review by the oncologist I read ,I did not find it at all a problem that it did not include neuro radiology. This would have created an unwieldy textbook or required two volumes. I very much appreciate the author keeping it to one volume. The illustrations were beautiful and highly accurate and the information state-of-the art. Very importantly this was written by experts of the field by a leading institution dedicated in the care of oncologic patients.
A unique feature of the book is that it was multidisciplinary in its approach involving radiologists, medical oncologists, radiation oncologists, and surgeons. Each chapter was well organized and the book followed this theme throughout and in a consistent fashion. I greatly appreciated the logical and organized approach that carried through from one chapter to another. It is a pleasure to have all the material available in one place. I would recommend this to all my colleagues who have practices dealing with cancer patients. The additional on-line material includes protocols for imaging that were valuable to my clinical practice.
